Star Station Seven

Star Station Seven was a bare bones version of Operation Moonbase. It came with the really cool space vehicles, the moonbase accessories including the tower and space station, but no aliens, and some very drab Apollo astronauts.

I don’t like the Astronauts because they all have the same droll face and very little character. It would have been better to have left the faces out and just put a round helmet front, I think. The poses don’t look natural. Mine were minted in orange, and I painted the one with the flag like an Apollo astronaut.

This was my last purchase from Marx, about 1978 at Toys by Roy inTown East Mall in Dallas. Marx went out of business soon after and Toys by Roy was not far behind.

Toys by Roy was where I bought all my Avalon Hill wargames and Tamaya model kits. Here, too, was where I bought my first D&D stuff that was just becoming popular in the late 70s.

This was a disappointing purchase as the prime mover was missing a set of wheels, the heliacal antenna was damaged on the right side, and my solar battery only had the tripod stand. Looks like Marx quality control was slipping in its last days. Dallas was too far to take it back, and I don’t think they had another anyway, so I kept it.

In 2014 I bought another off Ebay and was pleased with the contents.

Star Station Seven, as I said, is a bare bones Moonbase type playset. The terrain was just the 18 x 24 inch blueish playmat. No mountains, no craters, no rocks. The vinyl playmat is very tough, however, and mine has lasted to this day. It resembles the one in the more elaborate Galaxy Command, but is a smaller cut down version.

The only surface structure is the space station tower and I guess that makes for a simple moonbase. They tried using the space station for a lunar lander by turning it upside down, but that just did not work.

My tower is holding up well, but the space station is becoming brittle.

It came with two polyethylene rockets, molded in orange. I don’t remember a decal sheet of any kind.

For those of you who wish to have a Star Station Seven Playmat, I offer you a print out version here. Enjoy.
