Making Your Moon Base plateau

I called it “Marx Mountain”

You will need a shoe box, scissors, elmers glue, some cardboard, and printouts of the PDF files below.  The individual pages are designed to overlap about 1/8th of an inch so they should go together seamlessly.

A hot glue gun is helpful.

Print this out twice. Glue two pieces together to make the front and use the other two for the sides.

Also print out the top PDF and glue it together.

Dry fit all the pieces before gluing in place. You may have to make some adjustments.

First, glue the shoe box on its side to the cardboard base. Make the base about 1 inch wider than the sides and the front. Corners for the front sides should be rounded, but not the backs.

Glue to the top to the box.

Apply the front, folding part of it under the base and rolling it on the top. Try to leave a ridge at the top, but if it is too difficult, just glue it on. It’s a good idea to secure this as you go with clothes pins. Do not get in a hurry.

Apply the sides, like the front. The vertical lines on the printout make it flow in nicely with the front. Cut some horizontal folds around the corners so it will flow with the shape of the cardboard. Fold it around the sides, glue in place, and try to get a ridge at top.

One you are satisfied with what you have, allow it to dry. Don’t be discouraged with what you have. Remember, you can always start over or if you mess up a part you can print out more. I have built hundreds of cardboard buildings, so this was not all that much of a challenge.

Using an Xacto Knife or scissors carefully cut out the two holes on top of the plateau.

Next you have to assemble the interior core Silo and the floor. This can be tricky. The how to is on a separate page.

After that is done, you can make the base playmat. Print out the PDF and assemble as per the picture. You and trim it to the oval shape or leave it as is. Your choice.

The finished project should look like the picture at the top of the page.
